Gone Fishing
Gone Fishing... This necklace emerged from Sheila's confrontation with the devastating impact of trawler boats. These vessels destroy everything in their path along the seabed, catching and discarding marine life indiscriminately. The title recalls a simpler time, when 'gone fishing' meant fishing on a smaller scale, where a fisherman would say to his family "I'm gone fishing" together with a lot more respect for the sea.
She created this intricate three-part piece incorporating treasures from nature - pearls, corunds, and various semi-precious stones - all caught within the metaphorical nets of human consumption. A tiny bottle holds a handwritten message, like those cast into the sea by hopeful souls, carrying a simple truth: 'live more sustainable.' With this piece she continues her artistic commentary on our relationship with the seas and the oceans.
